Paper Doll Veronika update

Paper Doll Veronika has updated; Chapter 1 of Part III - Ocean, "Downhill Tales", has begun!

The part begins here.

The story begins here.

It updates on Fridays on my site and Sundays on Arktoons. I recommend using bookmarking or the "Save your place" gadget on my site, even once you catch up, because the site starts at the beginning and updates are several pages.

Veronika Bosch, who's never left her father's estate, has to go on a journey when envious animals kick her out. Half collage, half puppetry, it's the traditional media equivalent of an elaborate sprite comic.

Sugar Easter eggs

Happy third week of  Easter! Last year, for the first time I made a panoramic sugar egg. It has a chocolate cross inside, which surprisingly has held up fairly well.

This year I made one based on the egg featured in the 1939 children's book The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes by DuBose Heyward, illustrated by Marjorie Hack.

As you can see

So she peeked inside through the little hole on one end and she saw a beautiful scene with a sleigh, and a lake with people skating on the ice.

I have only one person skating on the ice, but I'm quite proud of the ice itself, which is hard candy.

It's wonderfully fortuitous that this last portion of Part II ended up being the one-hundredth episode on Arktoons, for which I received jolly congratulations! Now there will be a break, until April 26th on my site, April 28th on Arktoons, while I work on the printed book of Part I and prepare for Part III.

Mountain Dusk - Veronika and Stade

Bonus art for Chapter 26 of Part II of Paper Doll Veronika, which is now being posted on Arktoons!

The latest episode is here.

The series is here.

You can also read it on my own website. (I recommend my site for PC and Arktoons for mobile.)

This is actually unfinished–the four other figures were drawn, but cutting out a cellophane shadow takes longer than one might think, so this is what was ready for the chapter’s Arktoons debut.

The background is an unfinished watercolor by my grandmother--she gave me a bunch of them.

Thank you for a resoundingly successful crowdfund!

The crowdfund for a paper printed book of Paper Doll Veronika Part I – Forest ended about an hour ago, and it was a resounding success! Thirty backers contributed a total of two-thousand, two-hundred and two dollars, reserving twenty-nine copies of the book!

The site says it takes five days to process the money, and then I really get to work! Thank you so much, everyone!

Fanart contest winners!

So at the time of the end of the contest there were only two entries, and both were in the Adult (age 14 and up) category. So because they’re both excellent and I had planned to award three prizes, they both win! Here are larger images of the art:

I really love them! Congratulations to Sarah and Audrey! I will email regarding the prizes.

As an aside, although by my reckoning there should be three hours left for the book crowdfund, the site says two hours. Maybe I miscounted? Anyway, if you want one, better hurry!

Five hours remain!

Five hours remain for the Paper Doll Veronika Part I - Forest book crowdfund, so if you would like a book and haven't yet reserved one, you better get going!

And two hours remain for the fanart contest, by which you can potentially alternatively win a copy of the book! (Presently there are only two entries, so even though they're in the same category, since I was planning on giving three prizes, if there aren't any more, they will both be winners. It's a ripe chance!)

Grotto of the Redemption postcards

Today's bonus during the Paper Doll Veronika book crowdfund campaign, more antique postcards. These are of an incredible but little-known landmark in Iowa, an massive, elaborate construction of cement and stones, many of them semiprecious, portraying the life, passion, death and resurrection of Our Lord. I have been there and it is amazing.

And these postcards were printed in 1935, when the grotto was still being built. Now there is even more to it.

Melkior descendants

It's been a long time since I added to the Paper Doll Veronika character profiles, and the book crowdfund is a good occasion to do so!

Gettysburg postcards

One kind of perk for Paper Doll Veronika Paper Doll Club members is uploads from my collection of antique ephemera, such as I use for the chapter title cards. As a special bonus during the crowdfund campaign for printed books, I'm sharing some with everybody!

Looking at these now may evoke bittersweet irony (especially "Eternal Peace in a Nation United") but let us, finding ourselves overlooking a somewhat similar prospect, draw moral example from the courage and steadfastness of heroes like Lee, the countenance of whose monument when recently disgracefully destroyed reminded me forcefully of the Holy Face of Christ. Let us all be such an icon even in, if it comes to it, worldly defeat. And this is something I seek to express, however lightly, in Paper Doll Veronika, too.

Inside Thief Mountain

How all the caves and tunnels within Thief Mountain fit together in my comic Paper Doll Veronika. Not everything lines up perfectly because they weren't all scanned at exactly the same scale, and the ones with people are because I don't have a clean scan from before the scene got torn up by Lothar's emergence. Still, I think this is pretty cool.

The crowdfund campaign for a Paper Doll Veronika book is here!

Faux stained glass media test

I want to make faux stained glass, so I got Gallery Glass Liquid Leading, quickly made this pattern freehand on a spare piece of glass from a broken picture frame, and tested different media in the spaces:

The bottom blue and green corners, bottom red diamond, and left yellow diamond are nail polish. The center red diamond, top yellow corner, and upper left blue diamond are Higgins ink mixed with acrylic string gel. And the rest are Higgins ink mixed with Elmers clear glue.

The verdict is the Elmers clear glue works best, but the others may be useful for particular effects.

Of course it'd be grander to make real stained glass, but my father says I'm too prone to injuring myself to use a soldering iron. ^_^

Mountain paths

Backgrounds from Paper Doll Veronika. I'm posting lots of extra bonus content during the crowdfund campaign to make printed books of Part I. Usually only members of the Paper Doll Club get to see the uncluttered backgrounds!

But soft! As of yesterday, we reached the goal of $500 to cover printing costs! That means, barring disaster, there will definitely be books made! So come claim one if you want it!
